[00:00:00] Well, we would have heard in the verses about the communion, the little phrase that the time that we do all this, have communion service is… until he comes. And the Christian faith, which is portrayed in what we call the Christian gospel, the Good News. Although it has its centrality that gospel in the first coming of Christ does not exclude or cut off, or not also contain, the Second Coming we called, about the first advent, Jesus brought in Bethlehem. Christmas reminds us or celebrates about that. But the second Advent is also a part of the Gospel. One of the things you discover in Christian circles, is people have varied understandings they’ve picked up
[00:00:57] about that Gospel, as to how much it includes. And for some people what they’ve picked up is that Jesus died for me, and that’s the biggest part. And it is central, as I said. Now that’s not all the Gospel. The Gospel also includes the original Easter occasion. It’s about not only the Jesus had come and then eventually he dies on the Cross, but that Jesus rose again, and the Resurrection of Christ
[00:01:27] is also a part of The Gospel of Christ, and in 1 Corinthians, where it does talk about the central facts as being the death and the Resurrection of Christ, these are very much underlined. So if you had someone asks you what is the centre of this Gospel message, and you say the death and Resurrection of Christ, you’re doing pretty well. But that’s not all the Gospel.
[00:01:54] What does the Gospel message also include? But not only that Jesus died and Jesus rose but also Jesus returned to heaven and the ascension of Christ and what happened when He was lifted up by the Father and that His name Jesus was made to be the highest name. Where He was crowned King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Bible says about his being glorified it’s the glory given to him following all his mission
[00:02:26] being completed, and returning home That’s also part of the Gospel as well. So we have his birth, his death, his resurrection, and his ascension And we’ll look for a few verses into the Book of Acts, in Chapter 1 at the ascension of Christ as being a part of what happened to Jesus that brings our salvation. So it’s in chapter 1 and verses 6 to 11 that’s on the screen. So when they come together, as the disciples, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time, restore the kingdom to Israel?
[00:03:01] The promises that they would get back to their kingdom? And since Jesus has finished his work as he’d been teaching them, but nonetheless will they at this time restore, will you at this time to restore the kingdom to Israel? And he said to them, he said to them, It’s not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed in his own authority. But you shall receive power
[00:03:26] when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you’ll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the end of the Earth. When he has said these things as they were looking on, he was lifted up, that is, from the ground, and into a cloud, I presume, you know, a rank around. and taken out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went,
[00:03:51] behold two men they were looked like men at first, but they got dazzling white garments, they turned out to be angels. Two men stood by them in white robes, and said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing, looking up into heaven?” You can imagine the surprise and the complete open mouths
[00:04:13] as they gaped as Jesus going into, away from the earth. They didn’t understand exactly where heaven was any better than we do. The heaven where God reigns is not just past Pluto or beyond the moon or something. Is it another dimension? You can go to town with all the philosophical arguments as to where is heaven, but we don’t know, but Jesus disappeared out of sight behind the clouds, but he went back to where God the Father has his heaven. Remember the Lord’s Prayer, Our Father who is in heaven. And that example prayer for us to learn
[00:04:53] that prayer is from earth to heaven, and Jesus went back there. Why do you stand gazing into heaven? This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Now I listed a whole lot of verses, 10 or so of them, that I might go through. I don’t think I’ll get to go through them all, since we’ve had a good time already. In this particular passage that we’re looking at for a moment, stay with us in Acts, for just a bit further. We notice first of all that what’s being talked about is the same Jesus that left, is the One that’s coming back.
[00:05:38] And why that’s important to know is because some people do interpret about the Second Coming talk of the New Testament, that it’s really talking about the sense of the presence of Jesus in our service, which is not a wrong fact. He does come and be present where two or more together, are my name, there am I in the midst. Jesus is here tonight spiritually and the vehicle by which that’s possible for him is through the Holy Spirit, because the members of the Trinity work together. The Holy Spirit brings the presence of Jesus to the meetings. But bodily, he’s in heaven, remember? He has a body and he took it back to heaven.
[00:06:22] He’s there beside the Father right now, but he’s spiritually present with us via the by the Holy Spirit’s ministry. If you doubt that, I won’t turn us to it now but look up the Book of Ephesians in the first 1, 2, 3 chapters about how you know the indwelling of Christ in you is actually via the Holy Spirit helping the indwelling of Christ happen in the Christians. So when someone receives Christ, and often when people are led to Jesus’ little children They understood that they received Jesus into their life.
[00:06:59] How did he come? Well it was actually the fact that the Holy Spirit brought Jesus to take up his abode as it were in their hearts and that’s a bit of a mystery. You can track that down the first chapters of Ephesians. In fact, you know, if the Holy Spirit didn’t strengthen your heart You would not be able to take the moral impact of Jesus taking up residence in you. He will blow you apart in his holiness, but the Holy Spirit enables Jesus to be present spiritually. When we have prayer meetings, we often quote the saying
[00:07:39] that where two are more gathered together, there he is in the midst. If you make a habit of going to prayer meetings you will discover along the way, Especially if you go to a prayer meeting where they commit themselves to go a bit deeper in the prayer. There comes a moment when you’re sort of regretting being tired and having to go. Then, you somehow recognize something that’s happened in the prayer meeting, and Christ is there And that’s a very feature of the Christian church as well. We have worship services. The ones that really get to people is when the sense of the presence of Jesus
[00:08:15] And when that happens really strongly it’s usually when you have a revival. One of the features of revival is people become, Woooah, this is a sacred moment, there’s a movement of the Spirit that happens because the Holy Spirit brings the presence of Jesus but he’s not there physically. And our verse that we’ve been looking at in the beginning of the book of Acts says this same Jesus As you have seen him go, So he’s coming back, and by the way he’s standing in this moment on the Mount of Olives, he’s led people outside to this spot and when Jesus comes back again, there is an Old Testament verses to talk about how his feet will touch the Mount of Olives. So he’s coming back
[00:09:01] exactly what the angels a saying, as you saw him go, is how he’s coming back physically, visibly, Jesus Christ is going to return again. There are lesser versions of the second coming, particularly by people trying somehow to run away from the supernatural nature of what it really represents, the statement that Jesus is coming back. And they often have lesser forms of Jesus being present, some of which do happen. There’s people who believe that when you come to your death bed… There have just been so many testimonies of Christian people who have sat up in bed and said, I see Jesus! He is coming for me! I shouldn’t make a joke of that. That happens.
[00:09:45] That people sense the presence of Christ. Sometimes that presence of Christ isn’t because they’re getting better. Sometimes when people die, strong Christian people have been reported as saying that they were received into heaven by Jesus. That does happen. That’s not a phony thing at all. But that’s not the Second Coming, and there have been theologians who made this idea of Jesus collecting us in the next life as like the Second Coming. You can simplify the system if you like
[00:10:23] by just having Jesus died and rose and went back to heaven, and when you die you get taken by Jesus and that’s the Second Coming, you’ve got The Lot. it’s a far more simplified picture. Some people prefer the church teach things so it doesn’t ask so much heavy believing. But that’s not what it says. This same Jesus, not just the spirit representing Jesus, but Jesus in his body, who lifted up his coming back the same way and actually to the same spot. And that’s the first thing I want to say. We’ll move to another thing, we’re just going to go for as long as is good,
[00:11:06] because I got plenty to say but I could go on a long time on this. Go to Matthew 24, Matthew 24 Now you’ll know that there’s a whole section in Matthew, and also snippets of it are in the other Gospels as well. But people want to know about The End of the Age and Christ Return And where it says, this is Matthew 24 verse 27, for as lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
[00:11:41] Now, what that saying is that Jesus’ second return, the second advent is a public event, that he’s gonna make sure it’s very public. As lightning goes from the east to the west And that flash of lightning covers all territory when Jesus comes again, every eye shall see Him as another verse. Jesus is coming publicly. He left publicly. He’s coming back publicly. As to when that might be, look at verse 29. And immediately after the tribulation of those days,
[00:12:20] the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from heaven and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. So not only is it a public event, but it’s a drastic moment where all of what we’re used to as normal, security, physically is shaken. Then Jesus will appear in heaven or from heaven in the sa- or, no, what will appear in the skies. Remember the word heaven, in their understanding was the heaven where the birdies fly and heaven where the stars shine
[00:12:56] and the heaven where God sits. And they didn’t have much ability to understand that heaven wasn’t only just up. At what they saw when Jesus lifted up and got disappear behind the clouds, he went up at least into the sky, when he’s coming back, he will come back through the sky. And this will appear in the heaven, then you could take that word whichever way you like, as where God is or where the stars shine
[00:13:25] and I take it to be where the skies are. So if the literature said to you, someone looked up to heaven, they meant like that. It will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man and then all the tribes of the Earth will mourn. And they will see, the Son of Man, coming on the clouds of heaven, he left hidden by the clouds and when he comes back that’s not to say where he’s come from or whether heaven is another dimension or what is heaven. But when he comes back he’ll appear on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call and they will gather his elect from the four winds, that means north, south, east and west, from the four winds, from one
[00:14:16] end of heaven, the skies to the other. Or if we do have a few astronauts up there at Mars or somewhere else, they’ll get collected too. Angels will have a little special side trip, collector astronaut or two, wherever they’ve gone. When Jesus comes back it’s not only a public event, but it’s for everybody. There’s no escape from the change of the times of the Second Coming. There’s no hiding places. In fact, it’s in other verses—I won’t quote them—where people, as they recognize
[00:14:52] at the end of the ages, here and the judgments that come, they try and get and hide themselves in the in the cliffs, of the rocks and the hills, and hide us from the wrath of Him, who sits upon the throne, but you can’t hide yourself. Not only is this a public event but Jesus is coming in power and great glory, and His These angels will be sent out with a loud trumpet call and they will gather his elect from the four winds … One end of heaven! Whatever heaven has meant I guess to the other! Whoever you are, you will have the strong arms of the angels taking you to the gathering that’s going to happen on that day! The Bible often uses the phrase that day as a moment you don’t know whether they mean
[00:15:40] the 24 hour period, or whether it just means on that great climactic change of history, there’s going to be a moment when some strong angelic arm is on you and you will be rushed to the judgement scene before the arrival of the Christ. There’s no dodging the judgement of God when Jesus comes. It’s actually quite a frightening thing to read through the Scriptures and gather all the spots that talk about his second coming because he didn’t come like in the first occasion and the first advent as a little baby, arriving quietly in a manger and having shepherds come and look for him and wise men giving him gifts and people taking photographs and making Christmas cards. No. Well, whatever.
[00:16:34] He’s represented by that coming of Jesus into the manger. So that’s how he came the first time he came as a baby to join us and to reveal the heart of God through who he was the God man, but when he’s coming back the second time, he’s not coming in quiet birth in a manger. He’s coming with a shout, a loud trumpet call and a gathering of people from the four winds from one end of heaven to the other. It’s actually quite frightening. If you take your time, I thought I was going to list all the verses on the Hong Kong pillow
[00:17:17] and make that tonight’s sermon. It was a silly thing for me to say to myself because there are too many of them. I’m only on the first ones at the moment. What if I have decided to go through the more and the scriptures are full! I will talk about that Jesus is coming back but when he comes the second Advent is coming in power and glory for judgement and fulfilments. Some for people who will be a great blessing and others for people who’ll be a terrible moment of recognizing the end has come
[00:17:54] and they’ll call on the mountains to fall on them and hide them but you can’t hide from the One who’s coming again. Well, let’s go to another verse. I’ll do a few more. In Matthew 24, it emphasizes chapter 24 verses 27 to 31. He’ll appear… was that the one I was reading? Oh, here we are… That’s an interesting statement, it’s about what people back then often saw or if you lived anywhere in the desert areas of some of the places of our world, you’ll still see this. That if some creature dies, it’s seen in the skies of birds of scavengers and waiting for the moment for a meal. And so the vultures gather where the corpse is and similarly there’s going to be signs in the last days when this is about to happen, of
[00:19:11] the judgment, and the terrible things happening. And the signs are there, and this is one I actually quoted off of my memory. If you look at Matthew 24 and 27 to 31, sensation in heaven the signs say, so in the skies there’ll be things be seen. Will Jesus do a circuit around the world so the whole world sees those signs in the heavens of the skies? And all the tribes of the Earth will mourn…
[00:19:41] They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory and he will send out his angels as I quoted before and they will gather people from everywhere from one land of the heaven to the other’s. They are going to sketch people for the judgment seen. Now, I think I’ve said enough for you to see that in terms of the work of God in our salvation It includes both the coming of Jesus in the first Advent. It includes not only his death, but also his resurrection, but not only his death and resurrection, but also
[00:20:22] his ascension. And his ascension is followed by the Father making his name, to be the name above every name. But there’s one more thing that Jesus has done in all the things that happened to him, the things that he did, in order to provide our salvation, we sometimes call this the Order of Salvation, and people mix it up with the Order of how things happen in their lives, which is a different business.
[00:20:51] But they things bring about our salvation, they’re better called the History of Our Salvation, is the things that have happened in time, and will be a part of time when the Second Coming happens as an ultimate close of history, When you have the history of salvation, it’s not the story of us individuals and how, what happened to us, but it’s what God has done in history to make your salvation secure.
[00:21:21] And that history of salvation not only includes, as I’m trying to say, it’s a weary day for me today, but I’m trying to say it’s coming in the first place and being born. It includes all the things He did in His life when he fulfilled the law. It includes his death on the cross. It includes his rising from the dead.
[00:21:47] It includes his ascension back to heaven. So if you’re going to ask, say, what are the things of the history that Christ has done? Then you include his birth and his life, his death, his resurrection, his ascension, his glorification, or his being crowned King of Kings, Lord of Lords, but there’s one more, yet, one more thing yet that Jesus has done in history, or God our God has done, what’s the final, well there’s actually two more now that I think about it, there’s two more things I better include. The next one Is when he sent the Holy Spirit to begin the the the availability of the New Covenant, Anybody give me the name of the day that that was, that Jesus from heaven, Jesus and the Father together, sent the Holy Spirit on the believing disciples
[00:22:44] and they had this moment. Tell me when it was. I was looking at that man, I thought he was going to tell me. Yeah, the day of Pentecost, he knew, I could tell. The day of Pentecost was another thing that happened to fulfil the things in history that make for our salvation, made the availability of the Holy Spirit for Jesus not only died for you, not only rose for you, not only went back to heaven for you, not only was crowned and glorified for you but He has sent the Holy Spirit and that availability of the Spirit was the day of Pentecost and so that’s when the new covenant is offered to people and the Apostle Peter gives a call
[00:23:29] to all who hear and are called to come and not only to have the forgiveness of sins but also to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. now if we were to talk about not the history of salvation in terms of what happened to Jesus and what he did but if we were to talk about the order of salvation that happens to us do you realize that we actually that we have happened to us similar things has happened to Jesus
[00:23:58] And the first thing that happened with Jesus was that he was born. And if I were to outline the order of salvation of the things that happened to us, one of them is that you can get born again. I won’t ask you to put your hand up, but could you indicate to yourself without having to be embarrassed by my saying put your hand up? But have you been born again? Have you experienced what is called a new birth? Because justice that happened to Jesus, all that happened in the history of salvation is so that it can happen in the order of your salvation for the similar things to have a moment.
[00:24:37] But they won’t be quite in the same order and all are stretched out. Jesus was born of the spirit in the manger Christmas. We get born again whenever it is that we do business with God about our sins in the understanding that Christ has come and died for them. And whether that’s a climactic moment in the meeting, probably next on the 29th of Saturday of this month down in the convention center on the Gold Coast, because of the Graham team’s practice of putting on evangelistic events I could be pretty sure I know what will happen. there will be a call for people to come and receive Christ.
[00:25:26] And Will Graham is a good evangelist and has been proven around the world to have the gift of both his father Franklin and his grandfather Billy to be a person that when he gives the Gospel message that call goes out and people respond. And there’s an awful lot of people praying around the world for following those evangelists And so that’s why there’s things that happen, which is why we’re going to cash-in on it and see if we can get as many people as we can to be present.
[00:25:58] But there will be people who will hear God’s call and respond Some of them maybe just getting right because they’ve been backsliders And some of them who’d never really twigged The part of what happens to Christians as a result of what happened to Jesus Jesus is the history of salvation us is our Order of Salvation is that there’s an experience of being born again. And that will happen to some of the people. I’m hoping some of the people we take on a bus will experience what it is to be born again.
[00:26:37] And the Spirit comes in and he makes you a Christian, and it’s different from that day on. Although you’re a baby Christian never so much to learn. and there’s a growth that happens that has its beginning when the Word of God got in and you were born-again. And that’s one thing. Well, what else happened in Jesus’ order of salvation was you might know, he got baptized. Now, that was the moment that he did it to fulfill all righteousness, he said, and for him to be anointed of the spirit for his ministry. The spirit came on him at that moment
[00:27:17] and it wasn’t that he didn’t have the spirit cos he was bored of the spirit at his birth and the spirit was the one who was nurturing him and teaching him as he learned from the Scriptures. But at his baptism, the spirit came dove-like. When it says the spirit came like a dove it didn’t mean that it was a real dove, it means it came and came on him like dove comes and lands, and the Spirit came on him and he was anointed of the Spirit and he’d said to John the Baptist, let’s do this because this is how we fulfill all righteousness. And in our order of salvation,
[00:27:59] of things happening to us, you know, what happens next in Lyme, if you’ve been born again, I believe the Bible calls on you to be baptised. He won’t make you more born again, but it’s the way you’re meant to testify to it and just as Jesus fulfilled all righteousness by being born again but not only being born again, he was born at his birth but by being baptised, so also when we get born again, the Lord leads us to confess it in baptism. Next Sunday morning there And there will be a baptism here. And someone who’s previously come to Christ, but is now going to give testimony to it, will be baptized. You may know who that is. And that will be because, in what we do,
[00:28:52] and what we experience matches what happened to Jesus. But it doesn’t do it all at once, it doesn’t do it in the same order of him, he was in the River Jordan, well, the person on the Sunday will be in that pool. It doesn’t match in every respect, but you call that the things that are the order of your salvation, you get born again, you baptise, there are people who get baptised ignorantly, not knowing that they’re not born again,
[00:29:22] and they wake up to that later, and there’s been a member of this church that is true, because they’re a good friend of mine, Russell’s wife Kaye worked for this church and the childcare thing, but she assumed on her being a Christian when she hadn’t actually been born again. At least that’s her testimony, because when Russell eventually went to the college and was a student and they were assigned to the Whyndam Church, Kaye came to Russell and the message to the pastor there at the time and said I’ve just been properly born again. I don’t know her exact words, but she said,
[00:30:01] and I want to be baptized again. Because I think she already had. But because now she realizes the real thing had happened, she wanted then to follow suit and to be baptized. So she got baptized again, and they didn’t stop at that happening. And if people ask me, I’ve been baptized but I didn’t know what it was about. and now I do understand I just let them. There’s no necessity, it’s not something that
[00:30:32] there’s an angel watching with a big checklist and no, they haven’t done it properly yet. It’s not like that, but it’s a way of confessing. So, baptism is something that happens. But what happened to Jesus as you go through, that he not only was anointing of the Spirit and his ministry started after that moment of the baptism of the Spirit on him he was driven into the wilderness and he was tempted and he did things and his ministry started from that moment. He was Spirit anointed, and there is an anointing of the Spirit that we also get. The timing doesn’t have to be at any particular moment, but it’s just associated with your being a Christian
[00:31:15] that the Spirit comes on you more and more. and there can be a first moment when you realise it, it’s not a special experience of any sort other than it’s the coming of the Spirit and nearly all the people that are used as missionaries or whatever, when you see ones that have had the Spirit using them you trace back in their biographies that there was a moment when they realised the need, the trust, in the presence of the Holy Spirit whether it’s a deal or a move to you sitting in his carriage leaving an evangelistic event that was a successful one nonetheless, but an old man came up he’d want to have one of finger that bent like
[00:31:51] mine, and he waved it in the through the window of the carriage to Deelm Fields says honor the Holy Spirit. And Deelm fields got a shock that somehow God was talking to him that he had to honor the Holy Spirit and he got an anointing and his ministry saw things happened as God the Spirit came on him and and there’s There are moments and if you read biographies I do a lot of this where you read biographies because I track the ones that are successfully I say what did they do? How can they learn whether it’s a G. Campbell Morgan or it’s a missionary who went to China
[00:32:30] and got no results for a long time. It is that they come into an experience of trusting in the presence of the Holy Spirit and his anointing. And that anointing comes to Christians along the way in causes all the results of it it turn’s your gifts to surface he helps you know who you are he made success for your ministry because when you think ministry is what you do for him you’re always gonna be a bit baron or nothing much happening but when you realize ministry is what he does for you and you trust in his anointing and you trust in that power from heaven to come on you and in fact in your prayers you pray God I can’t do this on my own
[00:33:13] And to the degree you trust in his power and seek for his presence in the power of the Holy Spirit, there is an anointing and it’s something that not only you sense, other people sense. The presence of the Spirit of God and the meeting can be very, very tangible and that happens in times of church life and the whole story of revivals is actually about the special moments when the Holy Spirit comes to do a special work at times of his choosing. And yet his presence in the power of the Spirit is an amazing thing. So there’s the anointing of the Spirit. I have already mentioned the Baptism of the Spirit is what happened when you were born again.
[00:33:57] And so all of these things are things that eventually when you die and go to heaven, you’ll be glorified, and that’s another one that will be done for you. All of these things are a consequence of what happened to Jesus. But often the order is not the same as Jesus. He got born as a baby. You get born again when you first trust Christ. Properly trust him.
[00:34:19] Really trust him. Don’t pretend that you’ve made it on your own strength. But you cry out for him to be your Saviour. Then you are born again. That’s a very precious thing. what happens to you if I were to get you alone and ask you the question? Tell me your story. I’m not asking you to tell me what happened to Jesus. I’m asking you to tell me
[00:34:46] the events in your getting to be a spiritual person. How did it happen? And it would have to be a time whether you knew it or not, when you were born again. There’d be a time when you that you say where you want it all to God. When you confess to him in baptism, perhaps, you’ll tell that might be a very specific, precious moment. But they are the things that are happening to you. And it’s not inappropriate for us
[00:35:17] to beware of our order of salvation and to compare it to what has happened to Jesus without expecting the times will all be the same. You don’t have to go to the River Jordan for example to be baptised. till we wait for John the Baptist to come along either. Interpret that as you will. But it’s a fantastic thing to know that you have stepped into what Jesus made for us by what happened to him and when we know we’re experiencing it now and also when we know he’ll include that trumpet call
[00:35:59] And we won’t go to the chapter of the rapture I haven’t got time. But when the trumpet calls, if you belong to Christ, you’ll experience what it is to be lifted up at the moment of the trumpet call and to meet Christ in the air. There’s a fantastic set of things. What about getting into glory, into heaven? And having yourself change because your sanctification doesn’t get completed
[00:36:28] until you hit heaven and then it’s finished, completed and you will be glorified and you will be like Jesus. That’s yet to happen. What a thing to look forward to. Well, we’ve been talking here at the gospel and my central point if you want to take it away is understand is that the center of the gospel is not in the second coming…that’s the culmination of it but it is in the first coming and the first events of Jesus in the middle of history when He died for your sins and He was buried and he rose and then he went back to heaven when when he sent the Holy Spirit. It is all in Jesus, that’s the Gospel. It’s very important not to lock the Gospel just in the Second
[00:37:18] coming, not to lock only in Jesus’ death but to include all the things that He has That’s what I’ve been trying to bring out in the Message tonight. Amen. Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for what a Gospel we have. Thank you for our savior, what a Savior is ours. Thank you Father, for the blessed experience of being drawn into the fruit of that which he did, and knowing what it is to be born again, and what it is to confess him in baptism, what it is to be people who are being changed by him
[00:38:03] and gradually sanctified in him, what it is to look forward to that moment when we shall be like him, when we see him face to face, that public event of his coming for us and that taking of us to glory, what a future we have to look forward to all a part of our salvation. Father, thank you for this sensual message of the Bible which you’ve given to us. We thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
